Raincoat vs umbrella in monsoon

Rain pours down during monsoon. To protect self from getting drenched, humans have invented raincoats and umbrellas. What are their uses? What are their advantages and disadvantages?

Raincoats

Raincoats can be either the regular one-piece type or in two pieces. The two pieces ones have a top with sleeves and a bottom. The bottom part is either like a trouser or like a skirt.

Regular one-piece raincoats

These are made of plastic material that is waterproof. They protect us in severe downpour or when there is a drizzle with gusty winds. In latter case, umbrellas fall short since the winds blow the rain drops towards our body and umbrellas cannot save us from those. Also, the strong winds cause umbrellas to turn upwards and damage them.

Raincoats can be used when you drive a bicycle or motor bike. Your hands are free and not holding to an umbrella.

But it can be hot under the raincoat especially during a cloudy day when air is warm and humid. Moreover, water still enters inside with raincoats from the neck region and from the front buttons.

Shameful! Marital rape is not criminalized in India!

Umbrellas

Umbrellas fare well in the mild to moderate rains when there is no gusty winds. They are airy and keep you comfortable.

But protection from an umbrella may be incomplete. It fails during heavy downpour. Also, with gusty winds, it fails and may even upturn and get damaged.

Umbrella

Your one hand is occupied to hold the umbrella. Technical issues are common with umbrellas especially the automated ones. Replacements are frequent. Repairs can be frequent.

Despite all this, rainy season is a time for fun. Enjoy a hot beverage but keep yourself protected with either of the above, whichever suits you!
