Eye inflammation linked with Pfizer vaccine, an Israeli study states

As administration of vaccine against coronavirus is increasing, the number of its unknown adverse effects are coming forth. It is getting clearer that vaccines are not without side effects. In Israel, eye complications have been linked to coronavirus vaccine of Pfizer make.

The Israeli study findings

Prof. Zohar Habot-Wilner from Tel Aviv’s Sourasky Medical Center led a study that was multicentric and showed that Pfizer vaccine can cause eye inflammation. The Centers included Rambam Health Care Campus, Galilee Medical Center, Shaare Zedek Medical Center, Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer, Kaplan Medical Center and Sourasky. And the study was written and peer-reviewed. It got accepted for publication in Retina journal.

21 people had developed uveitis either 1 to 14 days after the first dose of Pfizer vaccine or after 1 day to 1 month of second shot of the said vaccine. Two patients had Multiple Evanescent White Dot Syndrome (MEWDS). The onset of uveitis was linked to the jab as per the WHO and Naranjo criteria. Zohar said:

“This time frame is consistent with other reports of uveitis following various vaccines.”

More details of the study

Prof Zohar added that some with uveitis had other systemic diseases but it was under control at the time of the jab. Their therapeutic regime was also constant for at least 6 months before the Pfizer shot. 8 out of these 21 patients had history of uveitis in the past. But this was 1 to 15 years back.

What is muscular dysmorphia?

Severity of the uveitis was in the mild category bit 3 patients had severe uveitis. Topical corticosteroids were employed to manage anterior uveitis. The eye inflammation subsided in all with therapy. She said:

“An examination at the end of the follow-up period found that in all eyes visual acuity improved and disease was completely resolved,”

The message

Prof Zohar states:

“The conclusion is that I do recommend getting vaccinated for people with or without a history of uveitis,”

The complete dose according to her should be taken. Also if symptoms come up, a proper prompt eye consultation is a must to save the eye. It is uncommon side effect but also seen with other previous vaccines.
