Why was The Weeknd in facial bandages at the AMA function?

 Canadian singer, The Weeknd walked away with the prize for favorite Soul/R&B song at the American Music Award function held on Sunday 22 November 2020. But he had come to the awards function wearing bandages on his face. People and his fans were concerned but he did not explain it during the ceremony. Why was The Weeknd in facial bandages?

The Canadian singer, The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye came on stage during 22 November 2020 Sunday’s American Music Awards ceremony wearing facial bandages. His fans and audience were surprised and also concerned about his well-being. This was not the first time that The Weeknd had come in this unique way for the awards function. Earlier this year, he had come to the MTV VMA ceremony with an artificially bloodied face. What was the reason for these antics from the singer?

Actually, these are parts of the singer’s anti-drink-driving awareness campaign. Earlier this year, The Weeknd had explained that his famous single called Blinding Lights was written about his experience with driving while he was drunk. But he clarified that he does not endorse such risky behavior.

And the bandages are also an indirect indication of body injuries that could occur with drunk driving; both for self as well as for others.

THE WEEKND’S TRIBUTE TO PRINCE

When The Weeknd went on stage to pick up his award, he did not forget to pay his homage to the late musical artist Prince. The Weeknd recalled:

“Last time I received this award, it was given to me by the late, great Prince.”

“And you know, he’s the reason I get to constantly challenge the genre of R&B and I’d like to dedicate this award to him. Thank you.”

The others who received an award this year was Taylor Swift. She gave a video acceptance speech in which she said that she has already started recording music again for her back catalogue.
