How patriarchy destroys lives of children in India?-Part 2

This is continuation of the case presented in this link Part 1

Discussion on the case:

If you have carefully read the case I narrated in Part 1, you will see that we are talking about a typical North Indian family who strictly followed and enforced societal norms in order to remain in line with it and for conformity. And what they got in return:

1. Bad male offsprings who were pampered, did not proper work, lied, cheated, and yet continue to stay with their parents

2. Good female offspring who was honest, obedient, worked and would help the family. Yet her ambitions and aspirations of life were cut short and she was given away into a household where she would suffer forever until her death.

So, you see all members of this household are actually unhappy. But on the surface, it looks like they are a perfect family with sons who live with them and daughter married off. This is called pseudo happiness. Negotiations, compromises, sacrifices, and coercion to leave careers can never fetch happiness for anyone: neither the trouble initiator nor the oppressed person.

All this (unhappiness and crimes) is the result of patriarchy, gender stereotyping and gender inequality.

There are multiple places where the family and parents went wrong:

1. Trying to conform to wrong culture and wrong societal norms

2. Not using their brains to counter societal wrongs

3. Preferring sons (C, D, E and F) and neglecting and hating daughter, G

4. Being selfish in wanting sons (C, D, E, and F) to stay with them for old age even though they were all good for nothing

5. Not realizing the potential and strengths of a daughter (G)

6. Not allowing a son (F) to pursue cricket as a career

7. Suppressing and forcing a son (F) to do jobs he does not like

8. Telling lies to their prospective daughter-in-law about their son, F's  work and inheritance in order to woo her into the family.

9. Not recognizing and acknowledging that the daughter G too has a share in property

10. Mother of daughter G remaining silent when her daughter was being forced to leave her job and marry into a family she did not like

11. Father proudly asserting that what he did was right, by using unclaimed silly flimsy logic that is impractical in real life

12. The younger brother B continuing to follow his elder brother's A's orders for his own family without thinking.

All the crimes and unhappiness were preventable. Had the family kept away from patriarchy, gender stereotyping, and gender inequality, they would have been 'truly' happy. But they chose the wrong path set by society and reached this sad stage.

Law states that male and female children are equal and neither marriage nor career choice should be forced on them. But not many families there follow it.

If you think that you or someone else you know are not getting equal treatment at home or society or workplace or school and are being forced to do things you do not want, you can approach local support groups for women and children. You can also approach the police and with their help make a case against the perpetrators of this heinous crime of gender inequality, even if they are your parents.

Patriarchy and gender inequality are curses in India and strict laws against them are a must. Also enforcement of the laid laws is top priority. Mother's should voice their concerns of their children and support them openly. Even if this means going against her husband, she should. Daughters should be reared to be independent and strong. Mere formal education does not make them strong. Tell me what you think of such a pseudo family!!!!
