Kasauli Brewery and distillery

Kasauli Brewery and distillery is located in village Garkhal, sub-district Kasauli, Dist. Solan, Himachal Pradesh 173204. It was established in 1855, as per the boards put up at the main entrance of the distillery.

This distillery is also called Mohan Meakin Ltd after Mohan Meakin who is the current owner of this place.

History

The company was originally founded during the British rule in the 1920s by Edward Abraham Dyer and was called Dyer Breweries. Edward was the father of Colonel Reginald Edward Harry Dyer of Jallianwala bagh massacre notoriety. There is another branch of this company, the Solan brewery in Solan as well. He had several such alcohol producing centers in South Asia. And in 1855, he incorporated them into Dyer Breweries.

The place was chosen because of abundance of spring water there and it's climate closeness to that of Scotland. Later, the brewery was moved to Solan and the distillery remained here.

There are several brands manufactured by this firm. These include Old monk rum, Solan no. 1 whisky, Diplomat Deluxe whisky, Colonel's special whisky, Black Knight whisky, Summer Hall whisky, London Dry gin, and Kaplanski vodka.

Many websites wrongly mention that kasauli Brewery and distillery is open to visitors for seeing. But this is not true. Kasauli distillery is not open to tourists to view with or without permission. You can only see the outside of the company but cannot have a look of the manufacturing unit.

The infrastructure of the company in Kasauli

The area under the Kasauli distillery is vast. Some small areas are sold to private people who have built a summer house there. There is a small canteen inside the campus. There is a restricted area where employees stay. These houses are constructed during the British era and stand strong to date with no issues.
The main manufacturing unit is further down the same private road owned by Mohan Meakin and called Mohan Meakin road. It overlooks the deep valley below.
