Mysterious radio signals from galactic center detected by Australian scientists

Astronomer might stumble on a new discovery....Maybe a new hitherto unknown stellar body. They feel so because there are some unique signals that their receivers have picked up recently from the galactic center? What could it be emanating from? What is the mystery? Even astronomers are perplexed.

The mysterious radio signals

In 2020, Australian space scientists picked up some radio waves with a distinctively unique pattern from the center of the galaxy. Later, they used more sensitive instrument to try to pick the unique signals. This instrument could pick it up once but after that there were no more of these radio signals.

Ziteng Wang, an astrophysicist at the University of Sydney and his team detected these strange novel radio signals and authored an academic paper on it. Ziteng said:

The strangest property of this new signal is that it has a very high polarisation. This means its light oscillates in only one direction, but that direction rotates with time,”

The Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder Variables and Slow Transients (ASKAP VAST) Survey picked up these signals. It is a radio telescope located in remote part of Western Australia. The astronomers suspect that these waves originated from an unknown stellar object. They have named it ASKAP J173608.2-321635 after the instrument and the sky coordinates. Tara Murphy, another astrophysicist at the same center opined:

This object was unique in that it started out invisible, became bright, faded away and then reappeared. This behaviour was extraordinary,”

The object went dark. Later the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa picked it up again once and no more of it was seen.

Expert opinions on this phenomenal observation

David Kaplan, astrophysicist from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee stated:

"As for why a source would stop emitting, it could be something related to instabilities in the magnetic field. Magnetic fields can get tangled up and then release energy in bursts,”

"This happens with our Sun, with magnetars, and with other sorts of objects. So it’s not so much that it stopped emitting, as it only emits sporadically (most of the time it’s off).”

What is the likely stellar object?

It could be something like the Galactic Centre Radio Transients. The signals bear similarities to their signals but with some differences. The Galactic Centre Radio Transients are radio-emitting objects around the Milky Way’s center with no specific identity.

They earlier thought it was a pulsar but it lacked other electromagnetic waves and its brightness was irregularly fluctuating.
