America was known to Italian sailors 150 years before Christopher Columbus discovered it!

History is reported from what findings researchers have found out. But it may not necessarily be correct always. For instance, it is said that Christopher Columbus discovered America. This assumes that no one was aware of it before Columbus. But new findings suggest that this is not so. In fact, Italian sailors were well aware that America existed more than one and half century before Columbus is said to have discovered it.

Ancient writings about knowledge of Italian sailors

Ancient writings has be reanalyzed and it reveals that even before Christopher Columbus is said to have discovered America, Italian sailors were aware of it already. But this did not make news until now.

Christopher Columbus hailed from Italy and sailors from that town already knew about America almost 150 years before Columbus is said to have found it. That means it was not a discovery but an exploration by Columbus.

Medieval Latin literature expert Professor Paolo Chiesa transcribed a circa 1345 document that was written by Milanese friar, named Galvaneus Flamma. This essay was discovered in 2013 and one passage in it states that sailors from Genoa already knew about America. It was called Markland or Marckalada and in Iceland documents it is mentioned too. It refers to part of the Atlantic coast of North America (assumed to be Labrador or Newfoundland).

What this finding means?

This means that America was discovered before Columbus set foot on it. And it again raises the question of what Columbus was thinking when he set off into the ocean. What was he wanting to find? And this follows the time when his statues have been destroyed and disrespected in several places.

Professor Paolo who is from the Department of Literary Studies, Philology and Linguistics at the University of Milan said:

We are in the presence of the first reference to the American continent, albeit in an embryonic form, in the Mediterranean area,”

Galvaneus was a Dominican friar from Milan who had good relations with the Lord of the city. His writings are historical and in Latin language. He had firsthand knowledge of the subjects on which he wrote. This essay called Cronica universalis talks about global history right from its creation. It was his last essay that was incomplete. He writes about seafarers who used to mention about the land to their Northwest. Professor Paolo adds:

“These rumors were too vague to find consistency in cartographic or scholarly representations,”

“I do not see any reason to disbelieve him,”
