 When the term prostitution is used, what always comes up in mind is the image of a helpless woman from low socioeconomic strata of society. But there exist in the world and almost all countries, male prostitutes as well. But these are rarely discussed. These are not looking out for customers from behind the windows but operate in parks, gay rooms, gay clubs and bars, illegal brothels, and also from homes of wealthy women. The term used for them is Gigolo or Jiggalo.

They are not pushed into this flesh trade like their female counterparts. Thus they are not helpless. They are working in it voluntarily. They get paydates arranged for satisfying a client of either gender. 

Singlehood and the wrong assumptions surrounding it

Some men take to this practice in order to experiment with sex. They may not be able to do it with their girlfriends or wives and hence enter this profession for that wider range of sexual experience. Many do it in order to get luxurious gifts and extra pocket money in order to lead a lavish life. 

There may be a very small fraction especially in the developing and underdeveloped world who are dependent on prostitution for living. These are in illegal brothels and the men here are usually young boys from overseas who are forced into it against their liking. These might have initially started selling their bodies for fun before getting sacked into the trade.

In almost all the countries, male prostitution is an underground activity and is illegal. But it is gradually finding its way into the community. This is a challenge for police, law, and health care workers considering the risks involved with people in this profession. Also, many men in this job do not think that they are prostitutes. For them, it is voluntary and pleasurable unlike that for the female prostitutes where it is full time, forced, and unpleasant. 

These men have a higher risk of STDs (25% as against 5% in female prostitutes, data from Netherlands). Unsafe sex is common in this group and they charge more for it. These men also suffer from psychological issues. This is either a cause or an effect of such a practice. 

Students are also a large part of this group. The current coronavirus pandemic might have led to a rise in such cases. And in those who are forced into this trade, they are from poorer nations. But physical violence is not used to coerce them into the trade. Instead seizing of passports or fear of exposing the men to their families is used to make them remain in it. 

These men also are into drugs. They are put on Viagra and Poppers (to relax anal area). And Internet has helped facilitate and flourish this trade. Anonymity is also ensured on the Web. These men are also mobile and spent an average of 21 days in one city before seeking greener pastures elsewhere. And experienced men are preferred and the supply currently in most areas is more than the demand.
