You find products in markets that have a wide range of price tags. Same type of product might be cheap in one shop and expensive in other shops. But human nature is such that when it is not sure which product is better, it will automatically settle for a higher-priced product. And this also goes deep into their minds. Hence such people who buy expensive products also start claiming that it is of the best quality. This might be true for that specific item. But sometimes, this may also be to boast in front of society and to hide the shame that goes with buying a low-quality product at a high price.
So it is true that a costly product is always the best quality?
Cost and quality
A lot of factors determine the price of a product. The demand for it, its supply chain, cost of storage, place of sale, branding, quality, hygiene etc. Thus quality is just one aspect of the price.

If the demand for a product is more, the price automatically rises. This happens especially when simultaneously the supply is limited. Also, the same quality of thing is sold at different countries at different prices. This difference is much more than one would expect when transport charges and taxes are incorporated in the product price. Also, the same product is sold cheaper in poor areas than in those where rich, elite reach. These are all marketing strategies to get the maximum price of the product while increasing the sale of a product. When one takes branded products, the cost is more. When goods are sold in a shop, they are more expensive than those sold on the roadside or pavements because cost of shop or its rent also is included in the cost of the former good. This happens even when the same product of same manufacturer is considered.

So it can be seen that cost of a product has several variables and quality is just one of it.
Risks of assuming that expensive means quality
When you equate quality with price tag, you may run the risk of a wrong assumption. One can never be sure that when he or she is paying a high price, it ensures good quality. One will come to know only after use. You may pay a high price but the product might konk off or tear or get damaged earlier than when you buy a low-priced product. It hurts more when this happens. Also, one is not ensured hygiene when they visit or eat at an expensive restaurant. Pay a visit to the kitchen of an expensive restaurant and you will know the truth. There have also been instances wherein you eat at a five-star hotel and get a gut infection.
And in developing countries and now increasingly in the developed countries, you will find that invariably there is a racket that runs parallel to a product sale. But this racket sells fake products: low-quality products with label of a branded product. How can one know the difference? It is very difficult.
The moral of the story
So the take-away message is that though by our thinking, expensive goods are better, they might necessarily not be so. You will get more disturbed and angry when a costly products turns out to be of a low-quality. So as a consumer, one has to be very careful.
First of all, remove the wrong notion that cost and quality are directly proportional to each other.
Next, always check things before you buy. This would be based on your knowledge and past experience. Look for genuineness of the labels. Research well before a buy.
Try out also cheaper products instead of always buying high-cost ones.
Also, when you find a fake product in market, take time to report on it to the relevant authorities.
