Mick was supposed to compete in his fist Grand Prix in Melbourne on 28 March 2021. But there could be a likely change of venue to Bahrain since Australia is closed for travel due to coronavirus restrictions. Mick will race for Haas and is following the footsteps of his legendary father.

Mick and his similarity to his father

Mick has the looks and physicality of his father. How far and deep this likeness runs is difficult to say now. But time will show! There is another son of a former racer who will also take part in the 2021 season. He is Max Verstappen who is racing for Red Bull. His father is Jos Verstappen who was Michael’s contemporary. The two boys have played together and holidayed together during their childhood days.

Mick will be under pressure to meet the expectations of people. His father’s great talent would be his benchmark and he will be hard-pressed to keep up to these expectations. But Mick also is able and competent enough. He had won the F3 title in the year 2018 and later in his 2nd season took the F2 honors as well.

Additionally, Mick is in the Ferrari driver academy and may probably drive the red car that his father used to win 5 of the 7 world titles that he won. He will have to beat his Russian teammate and fellow rookie, Nikita Mazepin. Mick has been called 'a very sweet little boy, always sunny, always laughing'. Mick first entered karting with his mother’s maiden name as Mick Betsch. He also plays football for charity or fun and is into squash and tennis game. He is also biking and in the gym.

About Michael Schumacher

Michael is now 52. He was a great driver but has not been seen in public domains since the December 2013 skiing accident. It was a terrible accident in which he had hit his head. People and media keep asking Mick about his father. But the response is vague and indirect. The family has not released any statement about Michael’s health condition. He is recovering but the recovery is slow. Jean Todt, former Ferrari team principal and now FIA president used to call Michael as his second son. He watches races sometimes with him and had said that Michael’s recovery is ongoing. Michael, however, is not bed-ridden. As regards Mick, the family’s long-serving PR and loyal protector of the family secrets, Sabine Kehm states:

'He is private, perhaps even more private than Michael. He is simply a dedicated driver. Getting to Formula One has been the priority for many years.

'That was clear in F3 and F2 as well. They are junior categories, but they are all-consuming — it is your life and it takes everything to be successful in them.

'Michael and Mick have always had a good relationship, as he does with the whole family.'

Michael and his family

Michael owns a £50million mansion on the banks of Lake Geneva. This is close to the Swiss-French border and Mick stays with them. Michael’s net worth is around £500m. But despite such a fortune, he gave his children a normal upbringing. The family moved from Monaco to Switzerland when his successful western horse rider wife Corinna was pregnant with Mick’s elder sister, Gina Maria (1996). Gina is also a western horse rider and like her mother most of the time in the stables.

Michael never exposed his children to the race track. He had said:

'How can a little boy understand all the hubbub, the crowds, the flashes?

'My children ought to be able to grow up just as Gina Maria and Mick without the pressure of being Michael Schumacher's children. Our daily life is that of an ordinary family. We eat together and take the children to school.

'They know my job, they watch the television and know a bit about it. Since they were about two they recognised the red car and know it is Daddy's car. I'm very open with them, answer all their questions.'

Corinna supports Mick’s career and is happy for him.
