But his widow, Sarah Horsley
has said that she is too horrified to watch the show about her husband’s death
and would avoid it. Hugh’s family had hoped that the series writers would not
portray details of his death out of consideration for the great grief that his
family is in for him.
SARAH HORSLEY AND HER
INTERVIEW
The widow of the late
Major Hugh Lindsay, Sarah Horsley gave an interview to The Sunday Telegraph and
said that the thought that the show creators were adapting the 1988 disaster
for TV horrified her. She had requested them to reconsider not adding the
accident event in their fourth season of the series. She said:
“I wrote to them asking them not to do it, not to use the accident. I
suppose members of the royal family have to grin and bear it, but for me it's a
very private tragedy."

The
show creators wrote back to her on it and Sarah, 67 thought that their letter
was rather kind. The letter read that the show creators and writers are very
much aware of her concerns. But despite their understanding of her situation,
they would not be able to heed to her request. They wanted her to know that
they would be dealing with that difficult and tough aspect of her life with
great care, integrity, and sensitivity.
SARAH ALSO REFUSED AN EARLY SCREENING
The show producers also offered her to view an early
screening of the show part related to her husband’s death but she refused. She
elaborated and revealed that she was more worried about the impact of that
particular episode on her daughter. When the Major died, Sarah was pregnant
with her daughter. Sarah said:
"I won't be watching it, it's just too upsetting to
see something like that. Perhaps at some point in the future, Alice and
I will watch it quietly together. It will be tough. My daughter has only heard
about the accident from me because she wasn't even born when it happened."
"I'm very upset by it and I'm dreading people seeing
it. I think it's very unkind to many members of the family [to dramatize the
accident]."

It
was in March 1988 when the skiing accident occurred near Klosters in
Switzerland. The episode is called Avalanche and Prince Charles played by Josh
O’Connor and Princess Diana played by Emma Corrin have to decide then about
their future together. The accident bit is symbolic of their collapsing
marriage. In the accident, Prince Charles was saved and so was his friend
Patricia Palmer-Tomkinson. The latter had severe leg and lung injuries. But
Major succumbed in the accident. Both Princess Diana and Sarah were with the
group on their ski trip but did not go for skiing. Instead, they remained back
at the lodge.
