Cases of a bride killing her new husband seem to be on the rise. It is sad but I feel that crimes of killing brides for dowry have come home to roost but this time it is the turn of bridegrooms to become victims.
There were and are a lot of dowry deaths you will find in India. This transects all castes, religions, races, and socio-economic strata of society. I remember that one woman who was my senior in medical college was killed by her in-laws over dowry. She was the eldest of the two daughters of her parents. Her mother, a teacher was running from pillar to post to get justice for her slain daughter. But I think she never got it. There are countless such cases of bridal killing for dowry that they make our heads hang in shame. But families of bridegrooms and bridegrooms are unperturbed by news of these heinous crimes.
So when I see this new trend of brides killing their husbands, I am not surprised. In fact, I have no emotions on these modern day crimes. Because I think that when most men of society or in-laws shed no tears when a bride was killed, why should the women of today or their parents shed any tear for men dying? Had the society sided the brides and given them quick justice, I would have felt sad on these new crimes committed by brides. But now, I have no sadness on reading these news.
It should not have happened but if it is happening, society is mostly at fault.
Often, it is noticed that parents pressurize daughters to get married into families or get married to boys that they do not want to. Most daughters bow down to the pressures and may try to adjust for their whole life into a household that they did not like. While, on the other hand, there might be some girls like Sonam who will commit crime to set things right. Of course, crime never pays and they are pushed into more problems due to it. They ruin their life. Had the society given them better and easy options, such crimes could have been avoided.

Now, boy's side will think twice before saying yes to a new alliance. They may have the fear factor which for a change is welcome. Earlier, it was the girl's side who used to fear!!!
Dowry deaths vs recent crimes of husband killing
1. Victims were brides. Now, victims are bridegrooms
2. Money loot was the factor. Now love or women suppression is the reason. Greed was the cause in case of dowry deaths and disrespect and suppression of women and girls is the cause in recent spate of husband murders. Love is also an angle in the latter cases.
3. Burning bride was common. Now hitting or killing with sharp objects or poisoning is the common modus operandi. Pushing off cliffs is also done.
4. Bride's family used to suffer and cry. Now boy's family is in the same boat.
5. Girls' families were fearful. Now, it is the turn of families of boys to fear for their safety.
6. Girls used to decide to not marry. Now, boys might want to not marry fearing their death.
7. Dowry deaths continue to date, even these killings would continue.

8. Justice is denied and delayed in dowry deaths, the same would happen in these cases.
Things have come 360 degrees, only the sides have changed! The only solution is to dismantle and abolish the harmful patriarchy. That will help society to better.
