Females and their disrespect: World and India!

Sons and males are preferred in society to daughters and females. This trend is detrimental and does not speak good of this world. Even Greeks and Romans gave high social status to men as opposed to females despite the fact that females are stronger emotionally, more skilled, and capable of multi-tasking.

India and the declining female:male sex ratio

In India, females are considered a burden. They are exploited by society as well as the family and not given their dues. They are expected to sacrifice with no worth or appreciation of any of their services. Sons and men even if bad are given undue importance leading to many families abandoning females once they are born. There are more girls in orphanages than boys and the boys go more for adoption then the girls.

Additionally, there is an alarming rate of female foeticide. Though sex determination is considered illegal, it is still practiced and female fetuses are aborted. Any female born is also subjected to neglect leading to her death. Thus female infanticide is also rampant in this society.

World and female child deaths

It is said even ancient Greeks and Arabs killed females in womb and after birth. The Yanomani Indians of Brazil continue to do it.

The ancient Greeks had strange ways if determining the sex of a child in womb. Philosopher Parmenides (c 520 BC) believed that the side of origin of semen produced either a male or a female child. Empedocles (c 450 BC) felt that the place of embryo implantation in the womb determined the gender of the fetus.

Hippocrates thought that hot diet of either parent led to a boy and cool diet led to a girl. Also it was believed that male fetus was on right side of uterus and female on left side. Abortion decision was that of a male: husband or father. Also abandoning a girl infant to die was a decision to be taken by a male.

Females and neglect

Females were oppressed and men dominated them. They lived less and died early mostly during multiple pregnancies. They also got less food. Those mothers who had sons got double rations than those who had only daughters.

Women were belittled and had least rights. Later property rights came but they were perpetually under a male. Even in Rome, 10 to 20% of female infants were exposed. It was also common in pre-communist China. Women were compared to wheel barrows and a woman said:

"If a woman is angry, her husband beats her; when he is angry, he also beats her."

This has changed in those countries but continues to happen in India to a significant extent even in this age. They have no dignity and despite education and capability are not given their due importance and status!!! Is it likely to change? Does not look like!
