The Face Mask Phenomenon in plastic surgery during the pandemic! It is incredible!

Many Industries have been badly impacted by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. But the one that is booming is that of the plastic surgery. Yes, plastic surgeons have admitted that they have seen a surge in their cases during the current pandemic. What is the reason for it?

PLASTIC SURGEONS TALK OF THE INCREASE IN THEIR WORKLOAD

During the pandemic, many economic activities are down. But plastic surgery is going well and in fact, the cases that these surgeons are catering to has risen with the pandemic. The reason is that more and more people are going under the knife because due to the wearing of face masks, some of their eyes and other facial area defects seem to have got highlighted and they do not like this.

One of the patients Renee James said:

“What people see right now are your eyes, with the masks on,”

Renee did not like the way her eyes looked behind the face mask and hence she felt insecure about it. In order to rectify the problem, she decided to get operated for it and set it right. She stressed:

“I have wanted this done for 30 years,”

Renee got her eyes done and also went for a brow lift surgery under Dr. Michael Niccole of Newport Beach.

PLASTIC SURGEONS AND THEIR SAY

Dr. Michael Niccole stated that he has seen a 25% rise in the number of cases he is catering to per month since the pandemic commenced. Now, he has a 4-month long waiting list for the operations. Michael said:

“In the 40 years that I have been practicing, this has been the greatest increase in volume of patients in our practice,”

Michael also revealed that now an increasing number of patients are asking for surgeries on their face area above the nose. He said that this is because that is only the part that is revealed now with the face mask on. He continued:

“I call it the face mask phenomenon and it’s unbelievable,”

Another of his patient was Indigo Allandorf. She went for an eye and nose work motivated by her mask. Indigo justified:

“So, where lips used to be the trend for the last five years, now it’s eyebrows and eyelids because no one can see your lips,”

THE OTHER SURGERIES DEMANDED BY PATIENTS

Many of the patients are also asking for a face and lip lift surgeries. The demand has risen because during the pandemic, more people are using Zoom for social contact and networking. Hence, their face and lips are seen in a close-up view to the person on the other side that they are talking to. They feel insecure when they know that they have some physical anomalies or variations in their facial area. Hence they ask for these operations on their face. Deborah Arakelian similarly got a face and lip life on her body. She explained:

“You don’t walk in and meet somebody. You don’t walk in and shake their hand. You’re looking in the camera and you’re sending out an image from your collarbone to the top of your head,”

Her surgeon was Dr Leslie Stevens from Beverly Hills. He said that he did not expect that his business would become so great during the pandemic. He revealed:

“In mid-May, we all thought it was going to be a disaster, but it turned out to be a boom for our industry,”

He also said that when people are working remotely, they tend to look at themselves in a whole new perspective:

“Now you’re sitting in front of a screen and you’re seeing yourself and saying ‘Oh my God, that’s what I look like?’” and they’re aware of things that may not have bothered them so much beforehand,”

And these rising patients are not necessarily of the wealthy type. Many of them are using their savings or other modes of finance to fund their surgeries.
