Dinner meeting between Boris Johnson and Ursula von der Leyen for post-Brexit trade talks ends with no agreement! What is the future now?

Brexit talks again failed. British PM Boris Johnson had a dinner meeting with EU Chief, Ursula von der Leyen. But the discussion over dinner had ended with no agreement. There are still large gaps that remained unfilled in the trade talks.

Brexit trade talks end with no agreement

In order to break the deadlock, British PM Boris Johnson had a dinner meeting with the chief of EU, Ursula von der Leyen. But it is reported that the dinner meeting ended without any firm agreement. A No. 10 spokesperson said that the discussion went well but still large lacunae remain in this crucial trade post-Brexit deal. But he also added that the talks will continue and there would be a firm decision out of it by the next week.

Ursula said that the two sides were still very far apart on the crucial talks. The gap has been difficult to fill despite so many rounds of talks between the two parties involved in it. More talks are expected to take place in Brussels later. It will be between UK's chief negotiator Lord Frost and EU's Michel Barnier.

More on the dinner meeting for trade talks

The dinner meeting between Boris Johnson and Ursula went on for three long hours. The two negotiators were also present on the occasion. BBC's Laura Kuenssberg said that the evening for the two sides had gone badly. The UK has been trying to have a smooth post-Brexit transition period. But with no firm agreement in place, it looks like there are high chances now that the UK might leave the trade talks totally and break off without any firm decision on it. This might happen by the end of this year.

Britain does not want to be associated with Europe but Europe wants Britain with it even after Brexit. They do not want to completely break their ties with the UK but the UK does not want to have any trade deals with Europe in a way that would hamper the growth of their own country. It is a very tricky situation and one will have to wait and see whether any sort of negotiations would help.

The end of the year and end of trade deals with the EU

Time is going by very fast. By 31 December 2020, Britain would not follow any trade deals it did in the past with Europe. There are still major disagreements on several issues between the two parties. The major ones are on fishing rights, business competition rules, and also on how a deal would be policed.

People had set their eyes on this dinner meeting that was supposed to be the last-ditch effort for the two sides to work out a proper solution. But there has been no common ground still on this matter. Britain quit from EU on 30 January 2020 but the trade deals were to be remade keeping in mind Brexit. 11 months was the time interval for it but then nothing was agreed on.

If no deal happens by the year-end, border checks and even taxes would come up between the UK and the EU. The EU might not like this but the UK would say that they have no option but to introduce it. This might lead to more bitterness on the two sides and hence more trouble.
